Valentine ROUX is a
student in engineering at ISARA-Lyon (Institut
Supérieur Agriculture et Agro-Alimentaire
Rhône-Alpes) in France where she just ended her 3rd
year. She took courses in agriculture,
agronomy, agri-food and environment. In
January 2011, she will take courses in
environmental sciences at the University
Laval in
Québec City.
-
-
She is currently a trainee for three months
at HRDC (Horticulture research and
development centre), St-Jean-sur-Richelieu (Quebec) with the plant breeding, physiology
and statistics team. Her research project
is: “Evaluation of advanced selections of
day-neutral strawberries”. The knowledge
acquired from her courses in agronomy, plant
physiology and agriculture permits her to
realize that project.
-
-
The objectives of the program are to
evaluate three cultivars (‘Charlotte’,
‘Seascape’, ‘Albion’)
and thirteen advanced day-neutral strawberry
selections in order to compare them and name
some for commercial producers. These should
be winter and disease resistant as well as
productive with big fruits.
-
-
The strawberry plants are treated 4
different ways: in a greenhouse, on soil,
under and outside tunnel. Twice a week, the
ripen fruits are harvested and many criteria
are studied: skin and flesh color, firmness,
sweetness, flavour, aroma, shape, yield,
fruit size and postharvest behaviour. At
midseason, pH measurements, titratable
acidity and soluble solids content are
evaluated.
